We regularly provide acoustical design for music schools, school band rooms, teaching/rehearsal studios, and practice rooms. Whether a music school is a free standing building, or contained within a multi-use building such as a secondary school, sound isolation is vitally important. We provide design of high isolation walls, ceilings and floors to greatly reduce sound transmission between adjacent music spaces, and to adjacent administrative or alternate use areas. We also detail doors and windows to provide the best possible sound isolation for the construction method being employed. Low background noise is an important factor in a music teaching environment, and we provide noise and vibration isolation design to control HVAC generated noise, and the more critical crosstalk to adjacent spaces that will occur through untreated HVAC systems.
Interior acoustics in a music school must control excessive sound power that can cause hearing loss in music teachers to meet OHSA and WCB requirements. Rather than simply designing a highly absorptive band room, we provide a design that balances the absorption with diffuse surfaces, ensuring that the rooms remain active and communicative for the teacher and musicians. Correctly timed early reflections provide the needed musical cues for volume and timing so that the lack of reverberant tail is less noticeable.
