Timms Centre for the Arts
Print Version

The Timms Centre for the Arts houses the new Studio theatre, a black box performance space, a rehearsal hall, as well as backstage support facilities. We provided full acoustical and sound/video system design for the facility, including interior acoustics and room shaping, mechanical and electrical noise control and vibration isolation, noise isolation and control, plus sound reinforcement, production, show intercom, show relay/talent page, and video show relay system design for this proscenium theatre.

The background noise and reverberation time are optimized for unamplified shows, where the subtlety of the actor's voice are clearly communicated. Because this is a teaching theatre, the sound system has to serve as a teaching tool and a production tool. There is a combination of established and advanced audio technology in use here, with the bulk of the production being done on a hard-disk recorder and DAT recorder. The console is equipped with mute groups and a full ten by eight matrix for maximum flexibility with minimum budget investment. We worked closely with the project architect, Edmonton based Brinsmead Ziola Associates, to help provide a superior new facility for the University of Alberta's Drama Department that met the tight construction budget.
